Treatment Planning CT Scan
  • A CT scanner takes x- rays of the body, similar to slices of bread. 

  • These images are used to plan the radiation treatments by helping the Radiation Oncologist locate the tumor and the critical structures.

These markings are aligned with the red positioning lasers, by the therapists.

To ensure that the patient is in a stable position for treatment:
  • If radiation treatment is to be directed to the head and neck area, a mask will be made.
  • If radiation treatment is required to the upper body, a pillow may be required which is designed to support the shoulders and arms.

Patient Markings
  • A reference point is needed to align patients for treatment each day.
  • A tiny amount of permanent ink is placed under the surface of the skin called a “tattoo”.

  • Pen markings are also covered with a clear tape to help keep the marks from washing away during bathing.
