Pediatrician at NEO Kids Studies Cystic Fibrosis

Pediatrician Dr. Gautam Kumar, along with AMRIC biochemist Dr. Justo Perez and microbiologist Dr. Mayra Rodriguez, are studying 30 CF patients to determine the right time to replace nebulizer equipment, particularly the tubing and mouthpieces used to deliver the medication to the lungs. Over time, even with regular cleaning, bacteria can build up in the equipment which can lead to more frequent lung infections and persistent colonization with dangerous bacteria.

Sudbury Cancer Research Published in International Journal

A study in Sudbury into a potential breakthrough treatment for cancer is being published in one of the world’s most prestigious cancer journals. The latest online edition of Cancer Research features research being led by Dr. Hoyun Lee, a Senior Scientist at the Advanced Medical Research Institute of Canada (AMRIC), the research affiliate of Health Sciences North/Horizon Santé-Nord (HSN).

Inaugural Spirit of Sally Spence Awards Presented at HSN

During her tenure as Clinical Manager of the Children’s Treatment Centre (CTC) at Health Sciences North/Horizon Santé-Nord (HSN), Sally Spence was known as a tireless advocate for children with special health and learning needs. Spence died of cancer in 2014. As an ongoing tribute to her memory, the CTC has created the Spirit of Sally Spence Awards, in partnership with the Health Sciences North Foundation.

New Facial Surgery at HSN

Dr. Christa Favot, an oral-maxillofacial surgeon, performed HSN’s first cadaveric nerve graft on a patient with a benign tumour (neuroma) on one of the nerves in the jaw.
