Health Sciences North Simulation Laboratory
Welcome to the HSN Simulation Laboratory. Accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in 2019, and established in 2012, our vision is to be globally recognized for patient centred innovation. We strive to improve the health of Northern Ontario residents, by working with our partners to advance quality care, education, research and health promotion. At the Simulation Laboratory we use inter-professional medical simulation, allowing learners to apply critical thinking, technical and interpersonal skills in a safe and supportive learning environment, with the ultimate goal of improving patient safety and promoting a culture of reflective multidisciplinary practice.
The Simulation Laboratory hosts over 220 events each year, and engages over 2,700 learners every year, promoting high-quality educational activities across all health professions including nursing, respiratory therapy, paramedicine, physicians and other allied health practitioners. Through collaboration with our academic and community partners we are fostering the future of healthcare in Northern Ontario and providing an environment for patient, and learner-safe education. Beginning with ensuring high-quality educators and a first-rate environment for learning, the HSN Simulation Laboratory has created the foundation for establishing a culture of patient safety, reflective team practice and patient-centred innovation.
We look forward to continued successes in training invasive procedures, team work, crisis resource management, and multidisciplinary collaboration toward a sustainable, safer health care system.

Mission
HSN Simulation Laboratory provides unique, realistic, simulated learning events that transform participants by opening doors to new skills and creating high performing teams, clinical teachers and leaders to enhance the quality of patient care. Students, residents, practicing clinicians, faculty and simulation lab staff work collaboratively in an engaging, supportive environment that brings out the best in everyone. Continuous attention to quality improvement and scholarship supports innovation and efficiency.

High fidelity simulation suites
Each High Fidelity simulation suite offers flexible set-up options to meet your teaching needs.
Each suite has:
- A designed control room
- An integrated audio-visual recording system
- A microphone system allowing wireless communication between the operator and specific individuals involved in the simulation session
Debriefing rooms
Each Debriefing Room have the ability to view live simulation sessions or playback recorded sessions from any High Fidelity Simulation Suites. These rooms can also be set-up as classrooms or skills rooms for smaller groups.
Each debriefing room has:
- An integrated audio-video recording system
- A large screen LCD display used for video playback and presentations
- Tables & chairs
Large conference room
The conference room can seat up to 40+ people. This large room has a number of tables and chairs that can be reconfigured to accommodate multiple teaching needs.

Multipurpose skills lab
The Multipurpose Skills lab offers flexible setup options allowing users to practice a wide range of medical and surgical skills.

- Three mobile skills tables with adjustable height

The HSN Simulation Laboratory supports high quality, multidisciplinary and innovative research that strives to advance clinical competencies and safety through the integration of simulation in research. Past research and scholarly activity has addressed the following themes:

- Supporting inter-professional education collaborations
- Supporting interdisciplinary teams within rural Northern Ontario hospitals
- Support for compassionate and effective end of life discussions

Simulation education courses
Getting Started at the Simulation Lab
Simulation fundamentals courses
The Simulation Fundamentals courses provide an introduction to those who want to involve simulation in their education programs, but are unsure where to get started.
With our Simulation Educators, you can learn about various simulation methods, creating learning objectives, creating sustainable programming with simulation, case scenario writing, and having an impactful debriefing session.
With our Simulation Technicians, you can learn about the roles and responsibilities of faculty and Simulation staff, the functionality and operation of our manikins, and the myriad of options for task trainers to enhance skill development.
Each of these courses is typically one to two hours in length, and can be scheduled as a group, or individually. All instructional material is provided.
Enhancing your simulation-based education skills
Moulage courses
Our moulage courses give you the opportunity to learn the basics of different skin effect processes (e.g. wounds, rashes, traumas, abrasions, etc.). These hands-on workshops will showcase amazing materials and methods for bringing higher fidelity to your educational event. In Moulage 2.0, instruction includes using molds to create your own reusable pieces for future simulation sessions. You will gain a new dimension of fun and creativity that will inspire.
These courses are typically four hours in length, and are scheduled as a group. All instructional material is provided.
Intermediate and advanced courses
Already have previous experience in simulation-based education? Want to take your simulation program to the next level? Our intermediate and advanced courses are for you!
These courses go in-depth on how to structure your simulation programming to meet the needs of your learners. The courses provide detailed, evidence-based instructions on the development of needs assessments, learning objectives, case scenarios, and program evaluations. We can further build upon your debriefing skills in meaningful ways to optimize the debrief sessions.
Courses are typically three to eight hours in length. Our half-day courses can be scheduled as a group or individually. Full day courses are scheduled as a group. All instructional material is provided.

Create a booking
Once you determine the best course, and have all your questions and concerns answered, our Administrative Assistant will provide you with access to our Sim Calendar to book your course date. Any questions related to booking should be submitted to simlab@hsnsudbury.ca.
After you submit your booking request, you will receive email confirmation of your date, time, and location for the course. You will also receive additional information about expectations and instructional material prior to the course date.

Teaching resources
The HSN Simulation Lab Receives Accreditation from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada
At the 2019 Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Simulation Summit, the Labelle Innovation and Learning Centre was recognized as a fully accredited simulation program. This status recognizes our program as leaders in simulation and part of a national cadre of clinical educators with expertise in CanMEDs, interprofessional education, scholarship, patient safety and professional development. It recognizes all the hard work of the educators that work for and with the HSN Simulation Lab and empowers continued growth toward excellence in education.
In addition to being part of the national simulation collaboration, this status allows the HSN simulation program to self-accredit simulation programs with Royal College MOC credits, apply for awards such as the John Wade Professorship, and be a preferred site for several training programs such as the Simulation Educator Training (SET) course. Special thanks to all who were involved in this in depth quality improvement initiative!
