Privacy and Access to Information at HSN

As of 2004, Ontario hospitals have been  required to follow the rules set out in the Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA) with regard to the collection, use, disclosure, retention and disposal of personal health information (PHI) by their agents (e.g., nurses, physicians and registration clerks). PHIPA also provides individuals with a right to access their PHI, subject to certain limitations, and to request a correction of their PHI.

In 2012, Ontario hospitals became "institutions" under the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA).  As an institution, hospitals are required to provide access to information that it has in its custody or control as well as protect the privacy of individuals with respect to personal information also in its custody or control.

As a Health Information Custodian (HIC) under PHIPA and an Institution under FIPPA, Health Sciences North (HSN) is required to take reasonable measures to protect the sensitive information that it holds.  HSN takes steps to ensure that its staff and agents understand their obligations under the Act to protect the privacy and confidentiality of personal and personal health information by making privacy a priority and shared responsibility across all levels of the organization.
