Important information on COVID-19 / Renseignements importants sur la COVID-19!

We are asking all patients and visitors coming to HSN to please wear a mask as an added step to reduce the spread of germs and protect vulnerable patients. Handmade masks are acceptable as are those available at retailers in our community. Patients going for a procedure where they must remove their mask will be asked to store it with their personal items. If you arrive at the hospital as a patient or care partner and do not have a mask, one will be provided to you and you will be expected to wear it during your time at HSN to keep yourself, other patients and care partners and our staff, physicians, learners and volunteers safe.

Before coming to the hospital, please check our COVID-19 info page for updates.

    Our Services

    Cancer Clinic

When required, patients are seen at Northeast Cancer Center (NECC) of Health Sciences North in order to receive chemotherapy and or radiation therapy. This increases the chances of reaching a cure. Referrals are made directly by the program.

    Diagnostic Assessment Program

Patients are expedited for a colonoscopy when we receive a positive test for occult blood in their stool or a family history of colorectal cancer.

    Endoscopy Clinic

At HSN we are committed to providing high quality endoscopy in a timely fashion. We have state-of-the-art equipment to do advanced colonoscopy, both diagnostic and therapeutic.

    Minimally Invasive Surgery

Using the latest technology for laparoscopic surgery, we avoid large incisions. This minimizes trauma and invasion to the body and expedites recovery. Cancer is treated in an equally effective fashion as an open surgery without the potential complications of conventional surgery.

Laparoscopic surgery works by insufflating the abdominal cavity with gas (CO2) to create a working space. Then, small ports are placed to introduce surgical instruments, including a camera which allows dissection of the affected segment of bowel. This is followed by removal and reconnection of the bowel with minimal manipulation.

    Rectal Cancer Surgery

Constant innovation is part of our mission. We offer state-of-the-art surgical technology and techniques for rectal cancer, aiming to preserve sphincter function with minimal invasion to the body. We were the first center in Canada to introduce TAMIS (Transanal Minimally Invasive Surgery) to remove small tumors inside the rectum, allowing patients to have their lesion removed and leave the hospital on the same day. As well, HSN is one of the few centers in Ontario offering taTME (Transanal Total Mesorectal Excision) which permits dissection of the rectum through the anus for large tumors. By using a natural orifice for extraction of the bowel, this avoids incisions in the abdomen. This technique is changing the management of rectal cancer around the world, establishing a new paradigm in surgery and HSN is proud to provide this service to eligible patients.

    Stoma Clinic

We have a team of specialized nurses who are dedicated to the care of the stoma when those are required. They provide support, education and treatment as needed.

    Well Follow-up Clinic

After completion of treatment, patients are followed-up in a regular fashion to ensure that any potential recurrence of the tumor is detected in time.
