The Diabetes Care Service offers a specialized approach to meet the needs of families with children/adolescents who have diabetes.

The Children and Adolescent Program will help the family learn to manage for events such as, school trips, a teenage party, sleeping-in and much more. Families living outside of the Sudbury Manitoulin area also have access to these unique services through various outreach programs.
Learning to manage diabetes is the best way to prevent or delay its damaging, long-term complications. We are located at the Sudbury Outpatient Centre at 865 Regent Street South in Sudbury. Our hours of operation are 8:00 am - 6:00 pm. We accept referrals from physicians, other health care providers as well as self-referral. The Diabetes Care Service offers programs and services to people living with diabetes. We are a program of Health Sciences North.
Who is a Diabetes Educator?
Diabetes Educators specialize in the management of all types of diabetes. They teach people with diabetes how to eat healthy, be more physically active, when and how to test their blood sugar, and much much more. A Diabetes Educator is someone who teaches, listens and cares about clients with diabetes. Diabetes Educators include specially trained dietitians, nurses, and social workers who are devoted to helping people live well with diabetes.

Finding My Way With Diabetes
This class is led by a dietitian and a social worker. It is intended for those who are looking for an introduction to healthy eating with diabetes, strategies for coping with their diagnosis and assistance on where to look for additional resources and support. The class is 1.5-2 hours long.
Diabetes Healthy Feet and You
This is a peer led program that provides an opportunity to learn about proper foot care with diabetes.
Outpatient Insulin Start-up Program
Provides the necessary education, skills training and support for those clients starting insulin. A physician or nurse practitioner referral is required. The client should be provided with a prescription from their primary care provider and arrive with their supplies at the appointment.
Drop In Day Program
Every Tuesday from 1:30 pm - 3:00 pm, clients are invited to attend drop in. This is designed for clients with more urgent questions or concerns relating to diabetes. Clients may see a clinician for a brief, 15 minute visit. Clients are seen on a first-come, first-serve basis and no appointment is necessary.
Freestyle Libre Group
Led by a pharmacist who teaches Libre start up and how to get the most out of your Freestyle Libre Flash glucose monitor.
Individual counselling is available by appointment.
This program is intended for women with gestational diabetes or women who have diabetes and become pregnant. It assists clients in managing their diabetes to help ensure a healthy pregnancy and baby. Staff are also available for pre-pregnancy counselling as clients are encouraged to establish healthy blood sugars before pregnancy.

Insulin Pump Therapy
Insulin pump therapy or Continuous Subcutaneous Insulin Infusion (CSII) is an alternative to traditional insulin therapy. Patients wear an insulin pump similar in size to a pager. This small device is programmed to deliver insulin 24 hrs a day in small amounts. Regular blood sugar testing is required in addition to nutrition management. Diabetes Presentations
Our team of diabetes educators present to other health care providers, organizations and community agencies on diabetes-related topics. This service is in high demand and requests are considered on an individual basis.
Dr. Boji Varghese, and Dr. Haroon, Endocrinologist, (diabetes specialist) conduct clinics on-site. A physician or nurse practitioner referral is required.
Gestational Diabetes Program
Dr. Falvo, internal medicine specialist is on site at the Diabetes Care Service weekly. A referral from a physician or nurse practitioner is required.
